Infants and toddlers, living in food scarcity suffer from, poorer health, development delays and are emotionally impacted. Hunger hurts. Adolescents and Adults have poorer physical and mental health and higher rates of chronic conditions, depression, diabetes, and heart disease and asthma these diseases can lead to premature deaths. The Elders continue to suffer with hunger related illnesses. Flying nutritional food in better serves the people than flying people sick out and back. The long-term care is prohibitory expensive and this cycle of health-related illnesses due to hunger, urgently needs solutions.
The average monthly cost for a family of four in Fort Albany and Kashecwan groceries is $1,831.00 this is the subsidized price. (NNC subsidy)2010)
Slabwood-relay for hunger, has secured access to free large quantities of foods. Gleaners food Bank of Belleville has joined in and championed this initiative sending dry and canned goods. Relay for hunger is collaborating with small independent merchants to secure shipments of produce. Relay for Hunger is a multi layered unique food sovereignty project, beginning with providing free food surplus. Collaborative efforts with True North Aid and Hip Rotary (Honoring Indigenous People projects.) Relay for Hunger has delivered 60,000 lbs of food and goods such as clothes toys blankets sports equipment, sacred medicines. These donations are shipped to food scarce remote fly in, communities.The cost for shipping is provided by sponsorships and monetary donations.
