With this wisdom I have created a website that is designed to share the cultural teachings and stories of the Indigenous peoples of Canada. I share our family initiatives and encourage everyone to participate with us, or begin their own act of kindness.
I believe that a little can go a long way. The "Cyber Gram's" website is a example of this mindset, as I encourage grandparents to join me and become cyber grandparents themselves. By becoming online pen pals and paired up with youth or children in foster care, they help contribute to First Nations as a caring society and bridge the emotional disconnect of being apart from their families.
"Relay For Hunger" is on the page ‘Community Initiatives’ I hope to inspire and encourage others to send food to Canada's Arctic regions. This is a ‘ call for action’, asking people to send food directly to the mailing address. The address for this isolated Igoolik, Nunavut public school is available on the Slabwood Learning Center website, as well as pictures of some of the teachers and students. Even something as small as a bag of powdered milk will bring smiles and nourishment, and show that their cry for help has been heard by other Canadians.
The need for First Nations youth outreach spurred me to add a simple chat box on the "Cyber Gram's" website, which links to my own phone. This feature will provide immediate assistance for anyone who uses it. I am glad to connect those who need support with an appropriate service they need, or to answer any questions regarding the Slabwood Learning Centre. Emergency service numbers are posted as well.
A daily blog ‘Lets talk about Learning” is a delightful page with entertaining cultural stories. Each story is published on twitter, I invite readers to enjoy these stories with their families. https://twitter.com/lola_lawton
The Slabwood Learning Center changes with ongoing new creative ideas, but the context remains culturally identifiable with the Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island.
"Earth teach me kindness, as dry fields weep with rain.
It is the simple little acts that can make a better brighter tomorrow."
I invite you to visit and become an active participant sharing and caring for our First Nations Inuit and Metis children, youth and Adults.
