Using his magical powers Rabbit threw wood-chips ahead of himself and then he would jump where the chips landed gigantic leaps from wood chip to wood-chip leaving very few tracks for wildcat to follow.
Wildcat was searching for great rabbit tracks after a mile he made a oath I swear by my beautiful tail I will have great rabbit for supper.

It was getting dark and great rabbit was getting tired he noticed he was on a great plain of snow, he saw a lone spruce tree to small to hide behind so he stomped the snow and used a spruce bough for bedding he fell asleep.
When wildcat came to the big open place he found a wigwam with a fire burning. He poked his head in and there he saw a Chief sitting quietly. He was solemn and strong but wildcat thought his ears that were long and standing straight up was odd.Great Chief have you seen a giant Rabbit go by? Rabbit yes there are hundreds, thousands. No need to be in a hurry stay and have rabbit stew with me. Thank you said wildcat for he was hungry after tracking rabbit all day.
Wildcat ate until he was full then he fell asleep. When he woke he was cold and found himself in the open space laying in the snow. There was no wigwam or great chief.
Rabbit tricked me he howled and I will get him!
All day into the night wildcat chased rabbits tracks rabbit staying ahead of wildcat knew he must stop and conjure up some magic to keep wildcat away.
When wildcat came upon the village he asked if anyone had seen a giant rabbit, shh he was told we are having a prayer meeting! Wildcat waited until the meeting was finished and asked again if anyone had seen a giant rabbit, No giant rabbits but plenty of smaller ones in the soggy swamp near the wigwam where the great chief sits ask him maybe he knows more. Wildcat thanked them and headed to the wigwam there he found the great chief sitting solemn. Sigamore the wise old chief said it was to late tonight stay and have supper his beautiful daughters will serve you then in the morning you can head out to find the giant rabbit. Once again wildcat ate slept. When he awoke he found himself on the icy cold snow, it was foggy and a drizzle mist was all around wildcat knew he had been tricked again. He got up and started to look for giant rabbit tracks he came upon a long house in there sat a chief with two white feathers and beautiful daughters. Exhausted and short of breath wildcat panted has anyone seen a giant rabbit shh friend we are feasting and dancing rest awhile then join us. The group asked wildcat to join in a song and wildcat made up a song that was all about finding and eating giant rabbit. when he was finished, the group had vanished and he was struck with a powerful blow to his head Giant Rabbit had tricked him once again. wildcat was furious and swore by his beautiful tail he would not be tricked again and he will get even with giant rabbit.
He tracked Giant rabbit to a lake and there he saw a ship he asked if anyone had seen a giant rabbit the captain said he hadn't seen any rabbits at all. Wildcat wasn't to be fooled this time and recognized rabbit he dove in the lake after the ship yelling I know that is you! Ill get you and skin you tonight! The ship fired cannonball shots at wildcat who had never experienced gunfire before. He turned around and headed back to shore rabbit had escaped him once again. Wildcat got out of the water and saw his tail was a short stump. wildcat had sworn he wouldn't stop chasing rabbit but in fear he ran and is still running today with a short stubby tail and that is how Bobcat got his name.
