In the beginning there was only blackness and nobody could see anybody else everyone went about stumbling and bumping into things and each other. They said 'this world needs light.Fox said he knew some people on the other side of the world who had plenty of light but they didn't want to share. Possum said he would be glad to steal a little bit. 'I have a busy tail and fur I could hide it there.' Possum set out for the other side of the world. When he got there he found the sun hanging in a tree lightening everything up. He sneaked over a took a tiny bit and stuffed it into his tail. The sun was hot and burned his tail off, that's when the people discovered he had stole a bit of the sun and took it back. Possums tail has stayed like that ever since.Buzzard seeing Possum said 'Let me try,I know better than to hide a piece of hot sun in my tail I will put it on my head and off he flew. Buzzard flew high and then he dove at the sun grabbing it in his claws and placed it on his head. But this burned his head and he has remained bald ever since. The people grabbed the sun away from him. Then grandmother spider said, 'Let me try'. First she made a thick pot out of clay then next she spun a web to the other side of the world. She was so tiny no one noticed her. Quickly she picked up the sun and placed it in the clay pot and scrambled back along a single strand of her web.Now her side of the world had light and fire. Everyone rejoiced. (adaptation of a 1890 Cherokee tale)
